Z-CHANNEL A MAGNIFICANT OBSESSION (2004)

#116 is the documentary Z-Channel: A Magnificent Obsession (2004). Z-Channel was way ahead of its time, starting in 1974. This LA pay movie channel, under its visionary programmer Jerry Harvey, didn't just show whatever came down the pike - it showed foreign and domestic films waiting to be discovered (or rediscovered), films that Harvey thought deserved and merited an audience. He championed directors' cuts and was the one that successfully premiered the uncut Michael Cim...ino film Heaven's Gate and helped take that film from bomb to masterpiece status. With an audience of Hollywood filmmakers watching, Harvey's channel became influential with the people that made the movies. Unfortunately Harvey had problems with depression and one horrible day killed his wife and himself. Fascinating, sad and almost a little too dry at times and told via interviews with friends and archived interviews with Harvey. Directed by Xan Cassavetes, daughter of John Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands.

TLA one-word review: intriguing
