THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

THE WIZARD OF LIES (2017)

#95 is the new HBO film The Wizard of Lies, about the real-life Ponzi schemes of crooked investor Bernie Madoff (Robert DeNiro) and the effect his infamous frauds had on his family and the thousands of people who had their life savings wiped out by this uncaring, unfeeling man.  DeNiro plays Madoff as the sociopath he seems to have been, staring straight ahead with no remorse as he’s sentenced to 150 years in prison.  His apologies fall flat.  Michelle Pfeiffer matches him as his wife Ruth.   So do Alessandro Nivola and Nathan Darrow as his sons Mark and Andrew who, like Ruth, see their lives destroyed by the actions of their father.  Madoff claimed to be protecting his family by never telling them of his schemes, but instead destroyed his marriage and family by doing so.  And with little or no remorse – DeNiro nails this despicable bastard who no doubt deserved a lot worse then the country club prison he is sentenced to.  The Wizard of Lies, well directed by Barry Levinson, is not very much fun but captures the essence of the awful Madoff story.  Special mention of the author of the original book, Diana B. Henriques - she plays herself throughout the film, interviewing Madoff in jail – she’s a pretty good actress playing herself!
