CAN HE DO IT?

THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

WHIPLASH (2014)

Whiplash is #13 on this year's countdown. Miles Teller wants to be the next Buddy Rich and wants his chance at the core drummer spot for the conservatory school's main band. But J.K. Simmons is the instructor that treats all his kids like they're in Marine boot camp - especially the ones he's looking to motivate to bigger and better things. This is one of the most intense films I've seen in awhile, as writer-director Damien Chazelle has constructed tension and edge-of-the-...seat drama, especially via an ending that will have you almost fall off that seat as you witness it. Simmons should easily and deservedly take an Oscar home for this role. Teller is his equal throughout as a selfish jerk who wants to be that standout drummer at all costs. He manages to emerge as a sympathetic character in many ways (but not always) as does Simmons. Does the end justify the means? This film will have you asking yourself that as you stagger out of the theater. This film should have been a Best Picture nominee and - whoops it IS! Thank you Dave Kirby. It's late and I am tired.
