WHILE WE'RE YOUNG (2014)

Watching movies: #58 of this year's movie countdown is 2014's While We're Young. Ben Stiller and Naomi Watts are forty-somethings who have not had children. Meanwhile all of their friends have so they don't quite fit into the "baby cult." He also can't quite give birth to his documentary, going on eight years of work and then some. But then some twenty-somethings (Adam Driver and Amanda Seyfried) meet up via their auditing the class he teaches and before you know it, they're all hanging out. A lot of funny moments as we see Ben and Naomi trying to blend in with their new younger friends. Things get a little serious as we find that Adam is also trying to make his way in the documentary world, and some folks are not quite what they seem. Film actually makes you think about age differences, and there are some nice scenes with Charles Grodin as Naomi's dad, who was a master documentary filmmaker in his day, Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul and Mary) as one of the historians being filmed for Ben's film and especially Adam Horowitz (ex-Beastie Boy) who is really sharp and funny as a grey-haired first time dad. Ending is a bit of a surprise but not wrong either, when you think about it. Directed well by Noah Baumbach. Recommended.
