CAN HE DO IT?

THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

WESTWORLD (1973)

While the original episodes of HBO's Westworld pile up on the DVR, we thought we'd go back and watch the original inspiration, the 1973 film of the same name. Richard Benjamin and James Brolin are customers of Westworld, a futuristic theme park where paying guests can pretend to be gunslingers in an artificial Wild West populated by androids. And they pay a LOT! The gunslinger in black is android Yul Brynner who (like everything else in the park) is programmed not to injur...e a guest. But something goes haywire - all the androids rebel and attack their guests with a vengeance. Brolin is shot and killed by Brynner and Benjamin realizes he's got to run for his life. Loved the premise of this film when I first saw it and still have a soft spot for it. Brynner is so foreboding and unstoppable as the man in black, who keeps coming no matter what. And Richard Benjamin plays his well-known, well-worn Richard Benjamin nebbishy part which works well in this story which converts from a vacation of a lifetime for the pair to a sudden life and death struggle. Worth a look especially if you want to see what spawned the Anthony Hopkins series. #148 of 2016.
