WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES (2017)

This may be the best of the whole series, rebooted or original, as War wraps up the latest series with a bang.  Caesar (Andy Serkis, who’s amazing and deserves acting recognition, motion capture or not) and his apes are attacked brutally by a group of soldiers.  Many are killed including Caesar’s family and he and a small group of apes go looking for revenge.  They eventually reach a camp headed up by Woody Harrelson, straight out of Apocalypse Now, as a mad colonel heading up this group of renegade soldiers.  This can’t end well for someone and I recommend you put your money on the apes.  The performances by Serkis and Steve Zahn as Bad Ape are excellent, and you will find yourself rooting against the humans and for the apes, who show more humanity than the homo sapiens here.  The ape effects are truly amazing.  Can’t tell you exactly how they do it but you will forgot you’re watching a movie about talking apes and become totally wrapped up in the story.  Parts of the end will remind you of The Great Escape.  A lot going on here, all of it impressive.  Kudos to director Matt Reeves, whose next project is The Batman.
