VICTORIA & ABDUL (2017)

Sometimes a little hard to believe, but we’re told it’s true – a getting on in years Queen Victoria (played by Judi Dench) meets Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal), a clerk who travels from India to take part  in the Queen's Golden Jubilee. Somehow, the Queen takes a liking to Abdul and she slowly but surely elevates him in her household, although the staff and inner circle see this friendship and escalation in power as something terrible and do all they can to put an end to it.  Judi Dench is delightful as the Queen, first going through the motions of her duties and then seeing the world differently thanks to Abdul.  Fazal is also strong as Abdul, who sometimes does not tell his friend the Queen everything she needs to know – but quickly learns the error of his ways.  Eddie Izzard is also on hand as Bertie, Prince of Wales, another unhappy inner circle member.  The relationship is fun and touching to watch as both grow and deal with those that are upset by it.  Definitely worth your time.
