THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

TRUMBO (2015)

#125 on the 2015 movie countdown is the fairly new Trumbo, with Bryan Cranston giving his all as blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo. As one of the Hollywood Ten, Trumbo goes from one of the industry's top screenwriters to not being able to get work due to his Communist beliefs. The blacklist was - and is - a horrible thing but while the film is gripping and never boring, characters veer close to caricature including Cranston every so often. Trumbo was a robust personality in real life but to play him that way can sometimes end up with a performance that is too large. Cranston is very good overall but the true story is glossed over and a little heavy-handed. Helen Mirren is great as Hedda Hopper without overplaying it (which would have been quite easy to do). Diane Lane is utterly wasted as Trumbo's wife Cleo. Trumbo is an entertaining watch but it's not flawless.
