THOR: RAGNAROK (2017)

Thor: Ragnarok is light on its feet and has something for everyone, from comedy (too many moments to name) to fierce super-hero battles (Thor vs. Hulk in a gladiator-style battle that almost brings the house down) to super inside comic book references (Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie) to a cool cameo (Dr. Strange!) to a great super-villain (Cate Blanchett, who could have been given more to do) who exudes evil when she just WALKS!  Director Taika Waititi is to be praised for making this film so many things to so many people.  The plot has to do with an event called the Ragnarok which has been predicted and will lead to the eventual destruction of Asgard.  Thor (Chris Helmsworth), while battling to help prevent it, loses his hammer and his golden locks (the Stan Lee cameo is priceless) while getting dumped on some sort of trash planet, lorded over by the Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum, pretty much playing Jeff Goldblum).  Aliens bet on the mighty champions of tournaments held on the planet, which is how Thor and Hulk end up facing off.  Loki (Tom Hiddleston) is also here, shocked to see his brother, and asking his bro not to screw up a good thing for him (Loki is more of an ally here than a bad guy.  Sorta). But Thor wants to get back to Asgard, which is in plenty of trouble with Hela and her undead minions taking on what’s left of the place.  I’m not doing this film justice – Thor is full of laugh-out-loud humor that is not out of place with the story being told.  There are films that have gone too far (Spider-Man: Homecoming?) in the pursuit of humor while still telling a dramatic story.  This is not one of them. Everyone here is on top of their game and it’s probably the most enjoyable film of the year for me.    Thor is nowhere near my favorite comic book character at all.  Well, perhaps he’s moved up a few notches with this treatment.  Highly recommended.
