INCREDIBLY OBSCURE FILM DEPARTMENT

THESE FINAL HOURS (2014)

The 2014 Aussie end of the world flick These Final Hours deserves to be seen. It deals with an asteroid hitting the earth and the inevitable fires and destruction rolling towards Perth. Nathan Phillips is a rough and tumble guy who would rather be blitzed when the end comes. So he abandons his pregnant mistress who won't leave the beach and heads off (he has a girlfriend at the party). But everything changes when he finds himself rescuing a young girl (Angourie Rice) from a couple of thugs and finds himself taking care of her and helping find her father. It's an uncomfortable film as we truly see glimpses of humanity going to hell - but it's a film of redemption as well! Both actors are superb and this is a solid addition to the "end of the world" genre of films. But you will be spent after watching.

By the way, Angourie Rice turns up in a much more familiar movie in 2016.  She plays (very well) Ryan Gosling's daughter in The Nice Guys.  Another movie you should see.

Posted here are the trailer to These Final Hours and the opening scene which sets up the film rather well - and disturbingly! (scene NSFW)
