TEEN TITANS: THE JUDAS CONTRACT (2017)

#92 is the 2017 direct-to-video DC Universe Teen Titans: The Judas Contract, a project stalled, cancelled and suddenly revived, to the benefit of comic geeks everywhere.  The story is taken from a story arc over four issues of the best-selling Tales of the Teen Titans comic book in the mid-80s written and edited by two of the greats - Marv Wolfman and George Pérez with artwork mainly by Pérez.  Terra (voice of Christina Ricci) is enjoying her one year anniversary as a member of the Titans   What no one knows is that she’s been planted there under deep cover by Deathstroke (voice of the late Miguel Ferrer – we miss you already, Miguel) to betray them when the moment is right.  The reason is to procure all of the Titans for a religious cult leader named Brother Blood (voice of Gregg Henry) who will suck the powers – and the life out of all of the heroes and become an unstoppable force with all of their abilities.  But Terra struggles with this as she has feelings for her friends.  Why are they so damn nice to her!  The story is strong and less time is spent on super-heroics and more on the relationships between the characters.  Yes they’re animated cartoons but the viewer is compelled to care for all of them – ever the two-faced Terra and Deathstroke.  The emphasis on personal interactions, laced with humor and feeling, make this one of the best DC Universe films ever.  This isn’t kid stuff.  Available On Demand and via Blu-ray.

TLA one-word review: bittersweet
