THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

SYNANON (1965)

#39 is 1965's Synanon, a hard-to-find feature that tells the slice of life story of Synanon House, then a real-life rehab organization that housed druggies, alcoholics and junkies and rehabbed them using what we might call toughlove these days. Edmond O'Brian plays the actual founder, an ex-alcoholic named Chuck Dederich. Alex Cord is the latest to drop in looking for help, Stella Stevens (absolutely gorgeous here) is the reforming addict who falls in love with him and Chuck... Connors & Eartha Kitt are two other house residents dealing with their problems in general and Cord in particular. This was actually filmed inside an actual Synanon House on the beach in Santa Monica and while the story is pretty melodramatic, it pulls no punches, careening to a not-exactly-happy ending. You could also take this at a camp level as well, but definitely worth watching. Best line of the movie: when someone offers a bunch of free tickets to a nearby famous attraction, Chuck's response is "Dope fiends at Disneyland??" Also: this film broke (and I'll bet continues to hold) every cinematic record for most coffee consumed and most cigarettes smoked. If you run across this relic, give it a look.

Should TLA see this?? Well with all of the coffee she consumes, she might wanna compare her intake with that of the dope fields.
