STRONGER (2017)

Stronger is the tough, gritty true story of Jeff Bauman (Jake Gyllenhall), the Boston Marathon bombing victim who loses both his legs and has to fight his way back to getting by with artificial limbs and something resembling a life.  Gyllenhall is excellent here portraying Bauman with all his common man flaws and Tatiana Maslany is damn good as his girlfriend.  Or sort-of-girlfriend.  They had broken up and gotten back together three times are were not together when he went to see her run the marathon, where he was injured.  The relationship is being defined throughout a good portion of the film, and it feels real and complex, not at all like a movie relationship.  The family and friends surrounding these two are portrayed as caustic and rough, especially Miranda Richardson as Jeff’s mom Patty.  Stronger isn’t afraid to show its characters, flaws and all, which makes for a much more interesting and realistic film.  Jeff’s battle to learn how to use his artificial legs and how to do things we take for granted (like use the toilet) are uncomfortably and realistic presented.  Stronger is not a pleasant film, but worth a look.
