THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

INCREDIBLY OBSCURE FILM DEPARTMENT

SKIDOO (1968)

SKIDOO (1968) is one of the strangest films ever made!  Directed by Otto Preminger, this film was filled with Hollywood establishment stars (Jackie Gleason, Carol Channing, Groucho Marx, Mickey Rooney, Peter Lawford, Burgess Meredith, Frank Gorshin, many more) in an attempt to make a movie that would appeal to the counterculture of the late 60s. Hollywood had no idea how to reach this audience, so Paramount gave Otto free reign to do whatever he liked.  And Otto, after experimenting with LSD, gave the world one of the biggest bombs in history!

Leonard Maltin reviewed Skidoo many years ago and ended his review with this quote, which made me seek this out many years later: "About one in a thousand will have the temperament to like this; everyone else will sit there dumbstruck."  What other reaction could one have to a film in which Carol Channing performs a striptease for Frankie Avalon, and where Jackie Gleason accidentally drops some acid and takes a trip??  Oh did I mention that Harry Nilsson sings all of the closing credits?

This is a must-see!  The trailer and Jackie's whole LSD trip are below. Skidoo is actually available on DVD (Olive Films), proving my theory that everything will eventually surface on video someday, no matter how bad, obscure or weird!
