THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

THE GOAL FOR 2018: 200 MOVIES WATCHED BY MIDNIGHT NEW YEAR'S EVE!  (AFTER TOPPING OUT AT 194 in 2017)

CAN HE DO IT?

SHIMMER LAKE (2017)

Shimmer Lake so very badly wants to be Fargo.  It fails.  Telling its small town story of murder, scandal and bank robbery in reverse order (I guess it wants to be Memento also), Shimmer Lake goes backward through a week as the sheriff (Benjamin Walker, virtually sleepwalking through his part) is trying to catch three small-time and small town crooks – one of which is his brother (Rainn Wilson of The Office).  They robbed the local bank owned by a local judge who plans to run for the Senate (John Michael Higgins).  Rob Corddry and Ron Livingston are on hand as a pair of FBI agents sent down to help – but they have almost nothing to do.  Wilson is manic but not much else and even Higgins is not used to best effect.  There are a few solid comedic actors buried in this mess.  I imagine one will figure out the backwards plot before the final – or is it the first – frame.  Shimmer Lake is slight, unsubstantial and why watch this when you could watch Fargo again?  A Netflix original.
