THE SHALLOWS (2016)

And back to the 2016 movie countdown - #94 is The Shallows, a would-be addition to the killer shark canon. Blake Lively is a lovely surfer and probable medical school dropout. Her mother has recently passed away and she heads for a secret beach in Mexico, where her mother once swam, to do some surfing. Of course she goes alone, hitches a ride so no car and wouldn't you know it - she is stranded on a rock by a shark attack with no one around and no one even knows exactly wh...ere she is. A seagull with a busted wing hangs out with her, perhaps watching over her, perhaps representing the spirit of her mother. Whatever. Lively is good as the injured surfer hanging on for dear life, using a pair of earrings to close up a huge gash in her leg (easily the most grisly scene of the year) and using her wits to battle the shark, who has already killed what few humans have made their way into the water. There is some drama in the final showdown between the shark and the injured surfer but the point of view shots of both seem off and the music is restrained at best, absent at worst. A dramatic score may have helped numerous scenes. The Shallows is a shallow film stranded in deep water.
