SAN ANDREAS (2015)

#47 of 2015 is the about-to-be-released San Andreas. Effects have sure progressed since the golden age of the disaster movie, the 70s, but plots sure haven't. This is Earthquake crossed with Planes, Trains and Automobiles (!) as this is a road movie for most of its running time! See, LAFD pilot Dwayne Johnson (in the Charlton Heston part) rescues people in choppers. His wife is divorcing him because he had changed in a bad way because one of his daughter died while he took her rafting. The other daughter is in San Francisco. Well guess what? The BIG ONE hits from LA to SF and he flies to a rooftop restaurant where his wife happens to be and plucks her off (she is, of course, the only survivor). While they are watching digital buildings collapse, their daughter calls from SF where she is trapped in a parking garage. Of course, they decide to fly the copter there and rescue her. But many modes of transportation will be needed to reach the crumbling city by the bay. There are earthquakes, tsunamis, fires, locusts, you name it as The Rock and Mrs. Rock make their way to Northern California. It just gets so silly that you have to chuckle. Did you know you can avoid a tsunami by just driving your boat up it before it crests? Good to know if it ever happens to you! Paul Giamatti has the thankless task of playing the scientist who warns the world and then dives under countless tables. Kylie Minogue has a weird cameo in the restaurant scene and AT & T Park plays itself. San Andreas is not boring but it does make 2012 the movie look downright sensible. It's also fun to count the kinds of boats that end up being swept through the city. Everything except the SS Poseidon gets - oh wait that WAS the Poseidon. Anyway if you like disaster movie and don't give a whit about plot, take a shot. Just wish they had brought back Sensurround for this. Or called it That's Armageddon...
