#28 - RUNAWAY CAR (1997)

Not sure how I ended up watching Runaway Car, a forgotten FOX tv-movie from 1997 that I stumbled across on YouTube. Nurse Nina Siemaszko has to pick up her car at the mechanic (the opening credits depict this moron forgetting to put back all the parts, driving around "testing" the car and generally abusing it). When she gets it, it's fine...for the moment. She also has to pick up and watch her sister's baby, gives a ride to a whiny Judge Reinhold whose car is not ready at that crappy mechanics and has a REALLY important meeting soon, and also offers a ride to a adult skateboarder who falls in front of her car and hurts his leg. So we have a full load en route when she suddenly finds her Maverick keeps accelerating and she can't stop it! Yep, sounds sitcomish and it's played for some humor but at the same time the scenes of this car weaving in and out of traffic are well done and there's a scene where the police are attempting to hoist the baby out via helicopter that is extremely nerve-racking. Runaway Car is oddly appealing although I am at a loss to explain exactly why. Maybe it's the careening from kinda silly comedy to deadly serious life-or-death moments. Like a very special episode of The Goldbergs. It sure isn't Speed and Nina is no Sandra Bullock. But for you Judge Reinhold completists out there - this would be a must-see. Not recommending for others necessarily. Or you could watch it. Or skip it. Could I be ANY more wishy-washy?? OH DAMN I almost forgot - BASED ON AN ACTUAL EVENT!!!
