THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

REVOLVER (1973)

#96 is 1973's Revolver aka Blood on the Streets. This Italian crime drama features Oliver Reed, of all people, as a former homicide cop turned prison warden. One day his wife is kidnapped and he is told to let a prisoner escape and in turn they will release her. A couple of twists: the prisoner doesn't know who wants him freed, or why, and Reed decided to kidnap the prisoner himself and trade him for his missus. He and the prisoner (Fabio Testi) form a sort of bond as the...y try and figure out what is what. Reed, although dubbed with a flat American voice, still conveys a ton of feeling as a law and order man who's forced to break a lot of laws to get his wife back. The script is a lot smarter and savvier than most Italian crime flicks of the era, and there's a wonderful Ennio Morricone score that you may have heard elsewhere - Tarantino reused a lot of it for his Inglorious Basterds. A good one. Yes, still violent but in bursts.
