THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

POSEIDON (2006)

#171 is 2006's Poseidon, the remake of 1972's Poseidon Adventure and boy, does director Wolfgang Petersen (Das Boot) follow the blueprint well. Stock characters are trapped aboard an ocean liner after a rogue wave capsizes it on New Year's Eve and they must make their way to the bottom of the ship (now on top) to have any chance of survival. The band of survivors include ex-NYC mayor and firefighter Kurt Russell, daughter Emmy Rossum, her fiance (Mike Vogel), pro gambler Jos...h Lucas and Richard Dreyfuss (in the Red Buttons part). The sets are nowhere near as impressive as the original film (I believe the original scored an Oscar for them) but the 150-foot-high wave that takes out the ship is well done and Petersen makes you feel grimy and claustrophobic as you travel with the actors to survival. Spoiler: not everyone makes it. I don't believe it quite holds a candle to the 1972 version, but this is an old-fashioned disaster movie that will give you what you expect, no more, no less.

TLA one-word review: unoriginal
