PENTHOUSE NORTH (2013)

#49 is 2013's Penthouse North, a thriller featuring Michelle Monahan, a former war photographer blinded by a suicide bomber. She now lives with her boyfriend in a ridiculously large condo in the NYC area (actually the movie was shot in Ottawa). It's New Year's Eve so she insists on being independent and going out herself and buying the Champagne. When she comes back, she can't seem to find her boyfriend. That's because thug Chad (Barry Sloane) has killed him, looking for ...some secret stash of money or jewels or something. It seems that her boyfriend was tangled up with some extremely shady characters. The shadiest: Hollander (Michael Keaton), who shows up even later and demands she tell them where "it" is hidden (it also takes forever to find out what "it" is). It eventually evolves into a "Wait Until Dark"-type situation where the bad guys are at each other's throats and the lights end up going out - the blind lady is, of course, very resourceful, especially when the odds are evened up a bit. It's an OK thriller, very familiar but enlivened by the performances of the two leads. It'll help you waste time decently if that's the goal but you will be a step ahead of the characters all the way through. And if you're a cat lover - don't watch. There's a scene that, while redeemed at the very end, is awful to watch as Keaton hurls a friendly black cat named Shadow off a roof. However, I Shadow has the last laugh!!

A little history: this film is also known as Blindsided (its Netflix title), was only released to theaters internationally (not in the U-S) and debuted in this country on Lifetime (!). Probably a bit of an upgrade from the usual Lifetime fare. Oh and Keaton did Birdman not long after this. Remember all that in case there's a pop quiz.

SHOULD TLA SEE THIS? Only if she has a crush on Michelle Monahan like I do
