CAN HE DO IT?

THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

PASSENGERS (2016)

Passengers is #188. The film is diverting enough and a decent time waster. Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence have good chemistry, Michael Sheen is fun as a robot bartender and even Lawrence Fishburne turns up briefly. But there is one glaring problem in this tale of a spaceship with five thousand people on board sleeping away 120 years or so until they reach Homestead II, a new earth. A malfunction wakes up mechanic-engineer Pratt with 90 years to go and he cannot get him...self back to suspended animation. What he does after a year is so wrong and so awful that it is quite hard to find any goodwill for his character. And what's worse is that he seems to get away with it. That makes a ton of difference to me, as there are a few ways the desired plot could have been followed without the bad feeling. So shame on the screenwriters that had to make this so creepy and unethical that it affects the enjoyment of this film. Don't patronize this - it's the wrong message at an especially bad time.
