THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

OKJA (2017)

Just released to selected theaters as well as showing on Netflix, this is the latest from a favorite director of mine, Boon-Joon-Ho, who also did Snowpiercer and The Host, two other excellent films that are worth your time.  For 10 years, a little girl in South Korea named Mija (An Seo Hyun) has been a friend and caretaker to Okja—an animal as big as a hippo but very gentle and loving. But after ten years she – and her grandfather, who knew this was coming – lose Okja when a multinational corporation takes Okja away to New York.  26 of these piglets were placed around the world with various farmers to grow to full size and then be brought back as a solution to Earth’s dwindling food supply.  Mija somehow follows her friend back to the U-S to try and get her back, but there are all sorts of others fighting against the corporation for all sorts of other reasons.  There is a scene inside a slaughterhouse for these animals that I found personally to be incredibly strong, even for a fictional bunch of animals.  The animation is absolutely incredible – you will believe that Okja exists.  Tilda Swinton is the head of this corporation (and her twin sister) & Jake Gyllenhall turns up in a small weird part.  Okja is kind of a dark fairy tale, but aren’t the best of the Grimm Brothers’ stories dark too?  Worth a look, but NOT for young and/or impressionable children.   A Netflix original movie.

SHOULD TLA SEE THIS: Without a doubt, although she’ll want her very own Okja
