CAN HE DO IT?

THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

NOW YOU SEE ME 2 (2016)

The first Now You See Me was surprising, fun, an unexpected treat that I found myself liking and, God help me, looking forward to the sequel. Well, we saw the sequel, #79, Now You See Me 2 (out this weekend) and it is extremely disappointing. After an very promising opening that finds the Horsemen hijacking (quite amusingly) a Steve Jobs/Apple-style presentation, the magic goes stale as they are somehow grabbed and taken away to Macau, China ("the Las Vegas of China"). Tha...t setting (which the film spends way too much time in) insures that this flick will make lots of money in Asia. There are only two really giant Horsemen tricks, far short of what is needed. And the second one is SO silly, you cannot suspend your disbelief. Daniel Radcliffe adds almost nothing as new nemesis Walter Mabry and Woody Harrelson also plays his oddball twin brother Chase which adds less than Harry Potter. It was going to be tough to surprise everyone after the first film, but this screenplay resorts to card tricks to keep the audience involved (which fails). If you liked the first one, stay away from this as it just doesn't even remotely approach the quality of the first film :(
