THE NICE GUYS (2016)

#66 is the upcoming The Nice Guys. I was concerned that all the best stuff was in the trailer - wrong! This is a blast featuring two extremely game performers, Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling, with great chemistry. One's a bumbling PI, the other is a tough guy who beats up people for cash, which is how they meet (Crowe goes to beat up Gosling for a client). Anyway, they both get mixed up in Gosling's current case, a search for a porno star who may or not be dead. A witnes...s they're looking for is also a person of interest for many nefarious people. And off we go. This of course has a Lethal Weapon feel to it (Shane Black is the director& co-writer) and a TON of violence mixed in with comedy - and it works. Who knew that Ryan Gosling could be such an effective physical comedian? Crowe also has fun with his performance, and Angourie Rice (who we loved in an excellent Australian end of the world film called These Final Hours) steals all kinds of moments as Gosling's 13-year-old daughter who seems to be a better PI than her dad at times. This is fun despite the blood and a convoluted plot. The 70s are conveyed well throughout (billboards for Jaws 2 and Airport '77 for example), the music is great (Earth Wind & Fire, Al Green, Climax Blues Band) and the two leads blend well together. It's a popcorn movie - and we sure could use a few good popcorn movies these days! The Nice Guys is recommended with reservations (ultra-violent).

SHOULD TLA SEE THIS? Yes, if only to see some of the outfits that she once wore (but will never admit wearing).
