CAN HE DO IT?

THE NEON DEMON (2016)

Let me say this: I LOVED Nicolas Winding Refn's 2011 film Drive! His latest directorial effort, The Neon Demon (#82), is gonna be tough for anyone to love. It is more way overdone David Lynch than Italian horror homage (except for the great Goblin-style music the film began with). And I LOVE David Lynch! Anyway, Jesse (Elle Fanning) is an under-18 and beautiful girl who has made her way to L-A to try to become a model. Fashion designers and photographers drop their jaws in... unison at the sight of her. This riles up the "aging" models in the room (who are about 20). Makeup artist Ruby (Jena Malone) wants to do more than just powder her cheeks. And then this admittedly stylistic film just goes deeper and deeper into insanity. She stays at a fleabag motel where Keanu Reeves is the worst desk clerk since Norman Bates. Oh and she comes back one night to find a mountain lion in her room (!). Yep we get it - vicious beauty - just like those damn models who are jealous of her youth. And if you dig necrophelia between Ruby and a female corpse, this is the only film where you're gonna find that! There's also cannibalism. Yeppers, fun for the whole depraved family! I don't mind at all something off the beaten trail (like Lynch) but it would be nice to have characters and a plot or at least a logical progression! Film students should see this for the camerawork and the visuals and then be lectured sternly about providing a story to match their pictures. I can tell you without a doubt that I will never sit the Neon Demon again. No wonder it was booed at the Cannes Film Festival.

SHOULD TLA SEE THIS? No. No no no no no no no no no no no no no no no. No.
