MISS SLOANE (2016)

Jessica Chastain is utterly ruthless as a high-powered DC lobbyist who takes on one of her most powerful opponents ever – the gun lobby.  She resigns her gig at one powerful firm after being pitched personally by the head of said lobby to help get a powerful anti-gun law defeated.  She goes to the other side and fights in the other direction, manipulating the media, the senators she has to turn towards supporting the law and even members of her own team.  Chastain plays her as icy, distrustful and incredibly good at what she does.  But she still finds moments of humanity here and there and, while we don’t totally sympathize with her character, we also figure out how Miss Sloan became the person she is.  The twists and turns of the story don’t totally hold up after you step away from the film and think about them, but while you’re watching, you’re totally absorbed in Miss Sloane, thanks to a tremendous performance by Chastain and support from Mark Strong, John Lithgow and especially Allison Pill as the one member of Sloane’s team who DIDN’T cross the street and change sides.  Recommended.
