CAN HE DO IT?

THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

We are gonna get to 200 movies seen in 2016 if it kills me. And it just might...#193 is 2015's Miles Ahead, Don Cheadle's labor of love biopic about jazz great Miles Davis. Cheadle co-produced, co-wrote, directed and starred in this unorthodox biography. The film is set in the early 70s when Davis was not doing a lot of work and was hooked on drugs, A journalist from Rolling Stone (Ewan McGregor) comes to his house and tries to do an exclusive interview. He ends up bein...g a sidekick to Davis while he drives to Columbia Records and complains about their pressuring him for new music. It also gets out that there IS some new music, locked up in his house. It gets stolen by an unscrupulous music producer (Michael Stuhlbarg) and suddenly there are shootouts and car chases and fistfights - a pretty zany (and fictional) riff on Davis' life. Which is what Cheadle wanted. Flashbacks to his early days, playing his music, confrontations with racist cops and especially his meeting, wooing and then mistreating his wife Frances (well played by Emayatzy Corinealdi) say much more about the man. Maybe a linear biography is not in the cards for the freeform Miles Davis. But this was quite a ride.
