MASTERMINDS (2016)

THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

CAN HE DO IT?

THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

Masterminds plays like an extremely long erratic SNL sketch towards the end of the show. No surprise since SNL cast members/alumni Kristin Wiig, Jason Sudeikis, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon star and the film was co-produced by Lorne Michaels. Zack Galifianakis is a not-too-swift armored car driver who has a titanic crush on his partner Wiig. Wiig quits her job but her buddy Steve (Owen Wilson) convinces her to use her charms to persuade Zack to steal $17 million from the... company. He gives Steve and company the bulk of the cash and speeds off to Mexico with 20 grand waiting for Wiig to join him with millions more. Nah ain't gonna happen. There are some funny moments here, but Masterminds should have committed to all-out farce as opposed to spending time trying to be a heist film too. That said, McKinnon is a scream as Zack's weird fiancé, Sudeikis delivers as a most unusual hitman and of course Zack is always amusing. It's ok but it should have been better. Sat on the shelf for a year before finally coming out this Friday (Relativity Pictures filed for Chapter 11 last year, holding this and many other pictures up). There is a lot of fun stuff so it might make a decent time waster. From the director of Napoleon Dynamite. And, astonishingly enough, based on a true story!! #130 of 2016

Should TLA see this? Well, it's funnier than The Lobster.
