THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

MANCHESTER BY THE SEA (2016)

THE GOAL FOR 2018: 200 MOVIES WATCHED BY MIDNIGHT NEW YEAR'S EVE!  (AFTER TOPPING OUT AT 194 in 2017)

CAN HE DO IT?

#185 is the Oscar contender Manchester By the Sea and if you're looking for a good time at the movies, this is not for you. Sad, serious and somber but worth your time. Casey Affleck is Lee, a quick-tempered handyman working in suburban Boston who gets a call that his brother Joe has been rushed to the hospital in Manchester, where he and his family are from. Lee finds out when he arrives that his brother has passed on. He makes sure that his brother's teenage kid Patrick ...(Lucas Hedges) is ok (we see in flashbacks that they were close when Patrick was a young boy) and takes care of him in the interim. Then Lee gets a jolt - Joe's will has named Lee as Patrick's guardian while also making him custodian of the house and the boat he owns. But there's a reason why Lee no longer lives in Manchester. This is totally absorbing. Casey Affleck is heartbreaking playing a man who you may have a difficult time feeling any affection for. A man who may not be strong enough to overcome the terrible thing in his past. A man of few words and a lightning fast temper. But when he gets mad it's really at himself. This is a tremendous performance, underplayed and nuanced. He should be a contender come Oscar time. Recommended.
