#56 THE MAN WHO KNEW INFINTY (2016)

#56 is the soon-to-be-released The Man Who Knew Infinity. Dev Patel is a impoverished math genius in India with a wife and a mother (he's so poor he is forced to live apart from his wife who stays with his selfish mother) who just knows - he KNOWS - complex formulas with no schooling or degrees. He writes to Cambridge where Hardy (Jeremy Irons) takes a chance and invites him to come to Trinity. He arrives with two thick notebooks of formulas that seem correct but Patel must prove them. He encounters racism, sickness and World War I, among other things. The relationship between Irons and Patel is stellar and the best thing in this movie. There's also great support by Toby Jones and Jeremy Northam as other Cambridge professors who guide Irons into letting Patel's great mind "run free." It's fascinating stuff, all based on the true story of Srinavasa Ramanujan, whose theories are still being used today to figure out black holes! Very moving at times, The Man Who Knew Infinity can be a tad routine here and there but well worth watching for these excellent performances.
