LOVE AND MERCY (2015)

#30 on this year's countdown is excellent! Love and Mercy, due out in June, tells the heartwrenching story of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. While fairly accurate, this is not your standard music bio. Director Bill Pohlad, known mainly as a producer, casts Paul Dano as the younger Wilson and John Cusack as the 80s version. It shouldn't work - but it does marvelously as Dano is absolutely perfect as the younger one, as he begins struggling with voices in his head but using w...hat he hears to create brilliant music. Cusack is fine as the older version, so drugged up at times by the villain of this piece, the doctor/legal guardian who keeps him in a muddled state and takes full advantage of the wealthy musician. Paul Giamatti is excellent, big as life but careful not to take his character overboard. And finally, Elizabeth Banks gives her best performance ever as Melinda Ledbetter, the Cadillac salesperson that Wilson meets and starts to care for (and eventually marries) She finds so much truth in every gesture, facial expression and in body language, maintaining a smile while all sorts of other emotions are buried not so far off the surface. The sound mixing/editing is outstanding, as is nearly every facet of this film. Love and Mercy is amazing, experimental, captivating and vivid in telling its story. Highly recommended. Hoping this gets a wide release and the recognition it deserves.
