#54 LOGAN (2017)

POSSIBLE SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW (although you really should be aware of what's going to happen before you even enter the theater) #54 is Logan and i must say that it manages to capture depth and feeling like few comic book movies before it. It's rare, even in comics, to see a mainstream hero get an exit story but here is one for the ages. The year is 2029 and Logan is driving a limo in El Paso. Professor X is not doing too well, given to seizures that could seriously injure people around him (there's an incident mentioned that happened in Westchester where one such uncontrolled seizure injured hundreds and killed a few peopole). So Charles is in hiding across the border in Mexico. Logan gets drugs illegally that control the seizures and mutant tracker Caliban is keeping a watch for unwelcome visitors. Logan is approached by a nurse for biotechnology corporation Alkali-Transigen, who wants him to escort her and an 11-year-old girl named Laura (Dafne Keen, who's really good) to a place in North Dakota called "Eden".After reluctantly accepting the job from Gabriela, Logan discovers that the nurse has been murdered and Transigen's cybernetically-enhanced chief of security and his enforcers, the Reavers are after them. Oh, and Logan is suffering from an unnamed disease and his ability to heal is getting slower and slower -- while Laura is a mutant who has Logan's exact abilities. Hmm. This movie, while incredibly violent and gory (it's rated R), also gives two beloved X-Men characters a fitting sendoff. Hugh Jackman and Patrick Stewart play off each other well, two old friends who have known each other for a long time and know that the end of the road is coming.

There is nothing cute or cuddly in Logan, and if there is, it's stomped on pretty damn quick. This is how a comic book hero should go out, guns - er, blades a-blazin', making the ultimate sacrifice and avenging the loss of a close friend. Logan is perfect for those who appreciate their comic book heroes and have wondered what the end game could be for these beloved characters.

Here is how Wolverine departs the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There are those who will disagree, especially the person I am married to. Their loss. Recommended.
