THE LAST FIVE YEARS (2014)

I don't know why there is so much hate for The Last Five Years (2014). Finally popping it in tonight and I think the songs are clever, the performances by Anna Kendrick (who is literally radiant, photographed in bright sunlight at the beginning of their relationship) and Jeremy Jordan are right where they need to be, and the story is unique and challenging. Told almost entirely in song, Cathy and Jamie are, respectively, a struggling actress and a successful novelist. We s...ee their five years together mainly in backwards order, from the breakup to the beginnings (hers in reverse, his in chronological order). One would think it would be easier to take that way, but it seems even sadder. Composer/lyricist Jason Robert Brown has written a whole mess of songs that spotlight the good, the bad and the ugly of each of them. Perhaps we are predisposed to love musicals and romance and the like, but nevertheless enjoyed this a great deal. #81 of 2016.
