THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

#186 is La La Land. Yep I was especially looking forward to this and expected to like it a lot but maybe not love it. When we hit the halfway mark of this tale of a young actress following her dream (Emma Stone) and a jazz purist trying to keep his passion alive (Ryan Gosling), I thought for a moment "where's the conflict?" And then - BOOM! Conflict. And that's when La La Land really takes off. The two leads are not really the strongest singers. The songs in La La Land... are good but not great. But in this package together, with this story, with the chemistry between Stone and Gosling, it all works magnificently! Full disclosure: I am a huge Emma Stone fan, and she did nothing to dissuade me from my admiration of her work. This is at once an old-fashioned musical and a modern-day narrative about what one must do to dedicate themselves to their craft and where love fits into that, if at all. Writer-director Damien Chazelle (Whiplash, another favorite of mine) has found a way to be old school while reflecting on what's important today. Or what seems to be important today. I'm going to stop here now because this film and its ending took my breath away. I loved it. And I love it. I always will. You should meet up with it too. HIGHLY recommended
