THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

KRAMPUS (2015)

Yep we are relentlessly seeing movies. This is what we do this time of year. Today we ventured out in these hellish 40 degree temperatures (won't winter EVER end?) to see #132 of 2015, Krampus. This comic horror movie starts out promising with a funny slo-mo Black Friday sequence in a department store as everyone battles for those very special gifts. We see Adam Scott and Toni Colette welcome in for Christmas some of the worst relatives imaginable. And then the power goes out and a blizzard hits, trapping everyone in the house. It gets worse - a creature based on German folklore starts to terrorize all. But this film can't quite decide if it's a comedy with horror or a horror film with comedy. It kind of sits in the middle unsure of itself. Usually the presence of David Koechner playing his typically boorish character is a clear signal that the goal is comedy. But his character actually has some serious moments! So Krampus is neither fish nor fowl. It's not terrible but this is no Gremlins.
