THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

THE HOST (2006)

#71 is 2006's The Host, directed by the man who went on to make Snowpiercer, Bong Joon-Ho. This is a Korean monster movie where the monster is created by the U-S Army dumping toxic chemicals into the Han River (Scott Wilson plays the doctor who orders his assistant to dump the chemicals). Anyway, what's really refreshing about this are the incredible monster effects (done by San Francisco's Orphanage) and the fact that the director plays all his cards up front, as the monst...er shows up in the very beginning of the film and runs rampage on the river bank in a tremendous scene. Unfortunately, the film reverts to slapstick as a family's preteen daughter is taken by the monster and the Korean authorities turn out to be terribly inept and misguided. They're more worried about a virus and quarantining the child's family - the family breaks away and searches for the monster's lair on their own. The ending of the film is also strong but downbeat and it makes you wonder how good The Host could have been if the middle hadn't strayed into comedy and heavy-handed social commentary. But worth a look for that opening sequence.
