CAN HE DO IT?

HOME AGAIN (2017)

Reese Witherspoon is a mother of two girls who has split from her husband and taken refuge across the country, in her late father’s house in L-A.  Her late dad was a filmmaker and the house is not only a virtual palace but it has a guest house and Grandma, played by Candice Bergen, lives nearby.  Reese has to figure out her career and her life while raising these two lovely children, and she’s nice to look at and you care for her character.  Here’s the MAJOR problem with Home Again:  while out celebrating her birthday with her girlfriends, they meet three young aspiring filmmakers at a bar played by Nat Wolff, Jon Rudnitsky and Pico Alexander.  They’re on the cusp of getting somewhere but they’re outta money and have no place to stay. So hey – why not stay in my guest house says Reese.  What?  Have three strangers you know NOTHING about stay within footsteps of the house you live in with your children?  This premise is seriously damaging to Home Alone – almost makes it a fable, a fantasy.  What’s ever weirder is that it’s actually Grandma’s idea (!)  Plus one of the filmmakers starts sleeping with Reese.  It’s weird – and gets even weirder when estranged hubby Michael Sheen makes his way to the west coast.  It’s all played very nicely and it’s very watchable and everyone is sweet at their core – but geez, there is so much credibility strained that you’ll have a tough time suspending your disbelief here.  Home Again is a sitcom with nice people set in a fantasy world that doesn’t exist in any world we know.  Worth a look but you’ve been warned.
