THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

THE HOLLARS (2016)

#179 is this year's The Hollars, directed by and starring John Krasinski of The Office. Struggling artist Krasinski is forced to return home from NYC because his mother (Margo Martindale) has fallen ill with a brain tumor. Leaving behind his very pregnant girlfirlend (Anna Kendrick), he plunges headlong into the woes of his dysfunctional family again, including his father (Richard Jenkins) and brother (Sharlto Copley). Plus his mother's nurse (Charlie Day) is married to his... old girlfriend, and Charlie's quite concerned about them booking up again - for good reason! The Hollars is filled with laugher and tears, sometimes in the same scene. It's overly familiar, but the performances, especially Martindale and Jenkins, make it worthwhile. There are some tremendous moments within this movie that help raise it a little above the average. Krasinski has a good feel for capturing intimate moments as a director and getting solid performances out of his actors. This is conventional but those special moments and this cast make The Hollars worth a look.
