CAN HE DO IT?

THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

HELL OR HIGH WATER (2016)

Been a while since we posted one of these: #120 of this year's movie countdown is Hell or High Water, in theaters now and one of the best we've seen this year. Chris Pine (in a fine underplayed performance) and Ben Foster (who shades a character that could have been very stereotypical) are two brothers robbing banks in Texas. But just small Texas Midlands banks and only the loose bills in the teller drawers. Foster is the ex-con who ends up in prison a lot, Pine has no rec...ord. Meanwhile, aging Texas Ranger Jeff Bridges (excellent) is facing mandatory retirement shortly and wants to figure this case out before he rides off into the sunset. He and his partner of Indian-Mexican descent (Gil Birmingham, also fine) are staking out bank branches waiting to see if the suspects show up. And why they are doing what they're doing will surprise you. Hell or High Water is rich with characters as it takes turns being a heist film, a modern-day Western and heartbreaking. Everyone who takes part in this film is perfectly cast, proving the old adage there are no small parts, only small actors. This has gravity, a great script and solid performances, well directed by David Mckenzie. Enjoyed this thoroughly and highly recommended.
