THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

HARBINGER DOWN (2013)

#115 of 2015 is this year's Harbinger Down which is a throwback to 80s monster movies. That's because Alec Gillis, who co-created the creatures in Aliens, Tremors, Leviathan, Death Becomes Her, Starship Troopers and Alien vs. Predator, among others, got a Kickstarter campaign going so he could direct his own monster movie. And no CGI here - Gillis' creature is done with latex and messy glop and slimy stuff everywhere. Plus 80s icon Lance Henriksen as a grizzled old sea captain! The plot of Harbinger Down: a massive crab trawler is joined by the captain's granddaughter (Camille Balsalmo) with her friend and professor, who are studying climate change and its effects on whales. But they discover the remains of an old Russian spaceship - and a cosmonaut who is perfectly preserved. They load it on board - and soon find out what else stowed away with Sergei. The creature effects are well done and harken back as intended. The story is just OK - you will be well ahead of the characters but it's not awful. If you liked these kinds of flicks in the 80s, then take a look. Currently on Netflix.
