HAPPY DEATH DAY (2017)

Yep, it’s shamelessly stealing the whole “Groundhog Day” concept and placing it in the form of a horror/slasher movie.  And I will tell you as it plays out pretty seriously in the beginning that nope, this was NEVER going to work.  But the makers of Happy Death Day realize very quickly that this has to be played amusingly at some level or this film will be as boring as heck.  And as their luck – or good casting – would have it, Jessica Rothe is playing the Bill Murray part here.  She’s a sorority sister named Tree (?) who wakes up one morning in the dorm room of sweet, nice Carter (Israel Broussard, who’s really good).  She’s hung over, late for class, and goes about her day – a day that caps off with her murder!  But then she wakes up and figures it’s a dream.  But she’s in Carter’s room again.  And the day plays out exactly like the one she just experienced.  And it happens again…and again…a few things happen here that make this movie better than it should have been.  First, Jessica is great as she turns from a megabitch into someone who takes charge and even into someone who realizes what an awful person she’s been to everyone, including her dad – her mom’s premature death is what made her a bad person.  Anyway, she makes this movie work.  Didn’t realize the last place we saw her was as one of Emma Stone’s roommates in La La Land.  This could be a starmaking performance for her, she’s that good.  Other then a kind of silly ending where we find out who was trying to kill her, Happy Death Day is very watchable and fun once we stop being so serious and trying to reinvent the slasher film.
