HAIL CAESAR (2016)

#20 is the Coen Brothers' Hail Caesar. Thoroughly enjoyable it's a day in the life of 1950's studio head Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin). On this particular day, he deals with the kidnapping of his biggest star (George Clooney) by some pretty gentle Communist writers. All kinds of classic Hollywood types cross his path, including Scarlett Johansson as an Esther Williams-type who talks like a gun moll. There's also the attempted conversion of a western Roy Rogers-type cowboy ...star into a "High Society"-type lead (which leads to some of the film's most hilarious moments). And Channing Tatum as a Gene Kelly-type has a standout dance number with a lot of subtext! Brolin is picture perfect with every nuance as Mannix. Oh and Tilda Swenton playing two sisters who have rival gossip columns is a standout. The film is well made but feels like a throwaway. It's fun but lightweight - your true enjoyment will lie in what you know about 1950s Hollywood.
