THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

THE GREEN GIRL (2014)

Fascinating documentary about the life of an actress named Susan Oliver, perhaps most famous for being the green alien girl at the end of the Star Trek credits as well as in the show’s original pilot.  Oliver seemed to be a guest star in just about every show made in the 60s and 70s but never starred in a series nor a major film despite an abundance of talent.  Director George Pappy dug deep to find former colleagues and friends who tell the story of a fiercely independent woman who refused to play the game and paid for it.  Oliver broke her studio contract despite warnings of backlash from Hollywood, refused to tie herself to a TV series (she had offers) and went on to become one of the few women television directors of her time (despite many obstacles). She was one of only 19 women admitted to the American Film Institute’s Directing Workshop for Women. Something else I didn’t know is that she learned to fly, became an experienced pilot and tried to become the first woman to fly a single-engine plane to Moscow (the attempt failed when Russia refused to grant permission to enter their air space).   Susan Oliver lived her life and career on her own terms until her death from cancer at the age of 58.
