GRANDMA (2015)

#64 is a gem. Grandma was written especially for Lily Tomlin and boy does it fit like a glove! She is an acerbic aging lesbian poet with lots of anger because she's recently lost her life partner. Then granddaughter Sage (Julia Garner) shows up on her doorstep asking for help - she's pregnant and looking for money to have an abortion. She has an afternoon clinic appointment - and she is afraid to ask her mom. Grandma doesn't have the $$ either, so they take to the road to meet a variety of Grandma's friends, some current and some not seen in years asking for cash. They tool around in an ancient Dodge Royal and meet up with all kinds of folks, finally ending up at Type A Mom's office in desperation (a great Marcia Gay Harden). The performances are pretty damn good and the film effectively veers from comedy to some very tender moments. Sam Elliott does some of his best work ever as an old lover - their scene together is so full of truth that you may think you were eavesdropping. Truly marvelous work by Elliot, for a change not playing a cowboy or a colonel. But if you like Lily even a little bit, you will love this film, releasing in August. Amazingly enough, directed by Paul Weitz, who also brought you American Pie (!). Highly recommended.
