INCREDIBLY OBSCURE FILM DEPARTMENT

THE GONG SHOW MOVIE (1980)

With the passing of Gong Show host and creator Chuck Barris this week (he also created the Newlywed Game and The Dating Game), it seemed right to take a look at this obscure gem.  If you are NOT any kind of fan of the bizarre game show this was based on, you should stay far far away from this.  In The Gong Show Movie, Chuck Barris plays…himself, the host of a show called the Gong Show!  (with me so far?)  But this alternate world Chuckie Baby is not a happy man.  Everyone wants to audition for his lunatic talent show, whether on the street, at a coffee shop or at a hospital!  A network executive makes him crazy with how filthy the show has become! Chuck just wants to run away…and run he does.  Meanwhile, we see Chuck on the job and we see on the screen for the first time anywhere (this is rated R) all of the acts who couldn’t get past the NBC censors.  Like the infamous Popsicle Twins.  No, I am NOT describing their act!!) And we also see panelist Jaye P. Morgan flashing the cameras in all her glory.  There are musical numbers (by Chuck, among others) and a brief appearance by a then-unknown Phil Hartman!  The Gong Show Movie is…something!

It’s hard to imagine that this movie ever got made – but it did.  It took 36 years to make it to DVD – but it has.  My hazy bootleg is now retired.  The Gong Show Movie is a day in the life of Chuck Barris.  I guess before he became a CIA agent.  Anyway, it’s a guilty pleasure of mine waiting to be discovered (I would say rediscovered but I don’t think anyone saw this when it was released).  Love ya Chuck – rest in peace
