THE GIFT (2015)

#110 of this year's movie countdown is this year's The Gift. A weird old high school friend, Gordo (Joel Edgerton) happens to bump into classmate Simon (Jason Bateman) and his wife (Rebecca Hall). He's an odd bird who keeps dropping by their house (how DID he get their address?) and has a very awkward dinner with them. Simon eventually has a discussion with him to say they are not friends and to stop coming around. And then things start getting REALLY weird with poisoned fish and missing dogs and whatnot. Let me say this - things are NOT as they seem which lifts The Gift from average to a cut above. Bateman is really good playing a typical Jason Bateman role where you're never exactly sure what his deal is. Hall is solid and avoids cliches as the very worried wife and Edgerton, who wrote, produced and directed, is excellent as Gordo the Weirdo (his nickname in high school), who is lacking in many social graces and seems capable of anything. Like I said, The Gift doesn't go where you think it's going. Worth your time - recommended. Do NOT watch the trailer - you will have a better experience without it.

TLA one-word review: unsettling
