GHOSTBUSTERS (2016)

We finally took a look at 2016’s Ghostbusters (#83) and yes, it has some funny moments as it reboots the 1984 classic and yes, we see most of the original ’84 cast pop up in cameos (roll call: Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, Sigourney Weaver, even Daniel Ramis, the son of the late Harold Ramis). But this seems sooooo ordinary despite the casting of Melissa McCarthy, Kristin Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones as the foursome. McCarthy and Wiig are pra...ctically straight, um, men, with little change to be funny or entertaining. McKinnon steals ever scene she’s in, as does Chris Hemsworth, playing the Annie Potts part and having a ball with it! But I’m hard-pressed to remember many other details of this thoroughly routine effort. Paul Feig, director of the very funny Spy and Bridesmaids, does nothing here to remind one of those other films. And don’t even get me started on how the Ghostbusters theme song was butchered!! The world could have done without this reboot. And it sure could do without a sequel – but that’s probably inevitable. Fun to see Slimer again, though!
