THE EXPERIMENTER (2015)

#28 of the 2016 movie countdown is 2015's Experimenter, a biopic of Stanley Milgram, the social psychologist whose infamous experiments involving obedience to authority are still debated today. Peter Saarsgaard is the professor who breaks the fourth wall frequently to narrate his own story, initially an off-putting device but eventually effective. That's just one of the unique effects chosen by writer-director Michael Almereyda, who also uses black and white rear projection ...to suggest rather then show authentic locations from the 60s and 70s. There's one lulu of an image - an elephant walking behind Saarsgaard in one scene to imply that his earliest and most controversial experiment was always the elephant in the room. Somehow this approach works once you get used to it but one wonders if more of a straightforward take would have told us more about the man then this gimmicky sideshow. Saarsgaard finds charm in a performance that easily could have been cold and distant and Winona Ryder is good as his wife.
