THE WEBER MOVIE COUNTDOWN

EQUALS (2015)

#58 on the movie countdown that never ends is 2015's Equals. Just another dystopian society where everyone wears uniforms, are prohibited to feel emotions and, um, SEX - are you KIDDING?!? Nicholas Hoult and Kristen Stewart are two such emotionless people who start to feel something for each other but they have no idea what it is. See, everyone has their emotions "switched off" after conception. But some start to feel again - they are suffering from SOS (Switched On Syndro...me). There are pills for that. Anyway, they display their feelings for each other in secret (in some really well done scenes, to be honest) and plan to run away together. Until the authorities find out that Kristen is - well, watch and see. There is one ultra-stupid plot contrivance that sets up the ending that occurs only to set up the ending which really pissed me off. Equals is familiar and predictable with really good subdued performances (well there ARE no emotions, remember?) from the two leads plus Guy Pearce and Jacki Weaver as a pair of authority figures who secretly help them. If you like this type of flick then go for it. I just wish it had taken the path less travelled by. Slated for release May 26th.

SHOULD TLA SEE THIS: only if she has a thing for smoldering Kristen Stewart. I'm guessing she doesn't.
